Recently some one uploaded a mod consisting of weapons made using a LEGO 3D design program, the use of that type of program shows promise for making simple, yet original ships.

There turned out to be software license problems with that. Photographs of real bricks and virtual bricks modeled by hand in non-Lego software should be fine, but are not simple or easy to do.
