Wouldn't this belong in friendly ships because you're adding a wingman (a friendly) and not really changing anything else?

yes, there are 2 versions of the mod in the zip, you have to use only one of the two. In particular the difference is the compatibility with the mod UGWingmen v2.3 http://xelerus.de/index.php?s=mod&id=586
